Compaq Computer Corp yesterday addressed the embarrassment that when it sells one of its Systempro servers, it frequently hands a deal of workstation business over to a competitor because there was no cheap desktop machine in the Compaq line up. It added two compact desk-top units with built-in networking and security, the Deskpro 286N and 386N, starting at $1,700 and $2,300 respectively with 1Mb and no disk; UK prices start at UKP1,600, $1,700 with floppy and UKP2,300 with 40Mb for the 386N, UKP1,200, UKP1,300 and UKP1,900 for the 286N. The 386N uses a 16MHz 80386SX and the 286N a 12MHz 80286. The machines are 15 by 14.9 by 3.9 and come with VGA-compatible Video Graphics System, and space for hard disk and floppy. It offers 120Mb, 60Mb, 40Mb and 20Mb disks, 1.2Mb or 1.44Mb floppies. Compaq also added the Video Graphics Monitor at $300 in the US.
