IBM has extended its 3174 terminal controller family with the TokenWay 3174, designed to be an economical new means for connecting a Token-Ring local area network with a host computer. TokenWay provides a link between a 4Mbps or 16Mbps Token-Ring and a host over a single line and services up to 40 devices on the local net – and can support many more than 40 devices when some of them are attached to the network via ordinary 3174s, AS/400s or other multi-user systems, and the thing can be configured locally or remotely. The TokenWay 3174 Model 90R weighs less than 20 lbs and is designed for a 19 rack. It’s $5,250, plus the Configuration Support-B2 Licensed Internal Code at $257 and is out on May 25 in the US.
