Mercury Communications Ltd has launched a voice messaging service which it claims is the first to operate internationally from the UK. Called Mercury 2700, the service mirrors electronic mail in allowing users to send and receive messages but operates on spoken messages. The service will also operate over mobile phones and is expected to appeal to would-be communicators thwarted by the time zone problem. It will be operated from within the Enhanced Services Division. Last week saw the arrival of an ISDN-based voice messaging product from software house Tudor Computing and the concept already has an enthusiastic following in the US with an estimated installed base of 12,000 systems.
