The Dutch multinational’s Philips Information Systems Co in Chicago is claiming to be the first to offer developers an Open Systems Interconnection wide-area networking board for MS-DOS micros. The tool enables data communications developers to implement Open Systems Interconnect application protocols, from layers one right up to seven, from their personal computers. The Philips OSI-PC card is a communications processor with a large memory – necessary to manage the seven layers of the OSI model by itself, freeing the CPU to perform the usual tasks of an MS-DOS personal computer. Access is possible at X25 level for pre-OSI protocols, session or application levels.
