Hewlett-Packard Co has extended its HP3000 RISC business computer line upwards with the addition of a Series 960 model and kept up the heat in the bottom-end workstation market with the $4,000 Apollo Series 2500. The 960, available immediately, offers up to 40% better performance than the Series 955 and is $485,000; the 955 has been cut 17% to $385,000. The new Apollo Series 2500 diskless graphics workstation is built around the 20MHz 68030 and 68882 floating point unit, at $4,000, and there are Series 3500 and 4500 models using the 25MHz and 33MHz 68030 respectively. Hewlett rates the trio at 4 MIPS, 5 MIPS and 8 MIPS. Series 3500 eight-plane version begins at $19,500 and the 40-plane version starts at $27,500. The eight-plane 4500 is from $31,000 and the 40-plane version from $35,000.
