California Software Products Inc, Santa Ana, California has tap-ped the functionality of Digital Research Inc’s Concurrent DOS 386 to offer a lowcost alternative to going to the AS/400 for IBM 5363 System 36 users running out of steam. The Concurrent DOS implementation, which supports multiple partitions of California Software’s Baby/36 implementation of the System/36 environment for Intel iAPXbased personal computers, was done by Univ-ersal Computer SpA of Italy. The software supports up to 10 us-ers, each getting multitasking capability at their terminal, on an 80386based ATalike or PS/2, and further users can be added by adding diskless 80386 processors via DRNet. The combination is claime to outper form a 5363 substantially, and the software is UKP3,800 for a full devel opment system for up to 10 users, and UKP1,835 for the runtime system. The full system cost is put at some UKP9,000, compared with a base price of UKP13,000 or so for a 5363 IBM 36.
