The Japan Electronic Industry Development Association has finished its sums and come up with figures for personal computer shipments for the year to March 31: it reckons that total shipments were up just 4% on last year at 2.06m units, increasing the value of the installed base by 15% to $4,552m; in Japan, 1.23m machines were sold, up 4%, but sales of add-on memory, disks, printers and other peripherals rose 16%; exports rose just 3% at 820,000, but Japanese dominance in displays is reflected in a 75% increase and exports were up 14% by value at $181m; 8-bit MSX-type machines made up 23% of total, but exports fell in this category; shipments this year are expected to reach 2.2m units, including the first 32-bit models, to do 50,000 units.
