Rank Xerox (UK) Ltd has announced both hardware and software additions to its Network Architecture offerings, with the release of the Xerox 8090 server series and Xerox Network Services Version 11.0 software. The Xerox 8090 Network server provides medium to large-scale file storage and retrieval services, and features a Xerox central processor with 1.1 Mb of internal memory, a 25Mb or 85Mb disk drive and 48Mb cartridge tape drive for sofware installation, file backup and archiving – memory expansion kits of 512Kb and 3.6Mb are optional. Xerox says the main improvements from the 8000 series include a smaller footprint, reduced power consumption, and increased disk capacity to 2.1Gb from 1.2Gb. Meanwhile the XNS Xerox Network Services Version 11.0 software claims to provide improved access to files residing on 8090 and 8000 servers, and an increase in the range of document processing services and disk storage capacities available to users of XNS-based Office Systems products; it runs on the new 8090 servers as well as existing 8000 network servers.
