For the first time, Facebook has revealed how many people use its website on a daily basis in the UK.

It says that more than a third of the UK population visit the site everyday, with 83% of daily users accessing the website on their tablet or smartphone.

But why are so many people logging on? All it does is connect people and there are so many other ways to do that. And as we continue to share our personal details with friends, Facebook embraces every detail – our likes, dislikes, love lives, habits and obsessions and uses them to help advertisers target us, earning billions for a small circle of employees and investors.

The site is emphasising users’ mobile engagement more than ever before in a bid to drive advertising to people’s handsets. Today, a Facebook spokesman told MailOnline: "Businesses should focus on people who come back online every single day, because that is how they live their lives…For advertisers, this will help them create campaigns that can reach the right people at the right time on both desktop and mobile."

Is that right? Are there concerns about third party storage of data and instant personalisation? Your postcode, gender, name and date of birth are all that is needed to steal your identity. Those details, thanks to Facebook, and many others are out there.
