Parting company with the chip side of the business, which earlier this month opted for Hunter Systems’ XDOS software emulation of MS-DOS under Unix for sale with its microprocessors, (CI No 1,050), Motorola’s Computer Group has signed with Insignia Solutions Inc for its rival product, SoftPC, for use as part of Motorola’s implementation of Unix for its 68030- and 88000-based computer systems. SoftPC is a software emulator that runs on Unix machines and exactly emulates an 80286-based IBM personal computer. Motorola says it will market SoftPC with each copy of Unix that it sells for its 680X0-based System 8000 and VME Delta series machines, where true XT-class speed or better is promised. It should outperform an AT on machines using the 88000.
