The confusingly-named NSI Logic Inc of Marlboro, Massachusetts has been quick off the mark in coming up with an extended EGA graphics board that supports the high resolution of 800 by 600 used in IBM’s Personal System/2 as well as the mid-range resolution of 640 by 480. The Smart EGA Plus half-size board supports multisynchronous monitors such as NEC’s Multisync as well the new generation of analogue and digital monitors such as Sony’s Multiscan. Using multisynchronous monitors, the board can run software written for IBM’s PS/2 Video Graphics Array and support of VGA graphics in 640 by 480 resolution is integrated into the board’s firmware. Up to 18 drivers are available for the board, enabling it to run a string of popular programs such as Wordperfect Corp’s Wordperfect; Lotus Development Corp’s Symphony and 1-2-3; Ashton Tate’s Framework; Digital Research’s GEM; Microsoft’s Windows; Autodesk’s AutoCAD; and Xerox’s Ventura Publisher. The board is a superset of the Smart EGA adaptor introduced in October 1986, and supports horizontal frequencies of 15.75KHz to 35KHz and vertical frequencies of 50Hz to 100Hz. Available immediately, the Smart EGA Plus board costs $500 and comes with a three-year warranty.
