Cyrix Corp, the Richardson, Texas company dedicated to making 80386-based personal computers do their sums a lot faster then they can with the Intel 80387, has come out with a new version, the FasMath EMC87, claimed to deliver up to five times the performance of the 80387 for tuned programs, and to run all existing 80386/80387 programs 20% to 300% faster without modification by using new proprietary algorithms that enable the chip to do floating point operations in far fewer clock cycles than the 80387. It implements full extended double precision IEEE-754-1985 architecture with parallel adder, multiplier and exponent units, and retails at $994 for the 33MHz version, $865 for the 25MHz, $774 for 20MHz, now.
