Aiming to build software revenues to 10% of its total business by 1990, and sick of having to compete with resellers bidding used Wang VS computers against its own new machines, Wang Laboratories Inc has told users that from the start of its new fiscal year in July, it will be unbundling the VS operating system from the hardware, a move that could raise VS system prices by as much as 30%. Software licences will not be transferrable with used machines, and buyers of used VSes will have to get a new licence from Wang to get software support.
