Everybody is familiar with the concept of the indestructible watch – the type of timekeeper that can be thrown in a pint of that and while it may emerge somewhat sticky it will still be merrily ticking away – well, now Menlo Park, California Paravant Computer Systems Inc claims to have manufactured an indestructible laptop, the RLT-88: this laptop, so Paravant claims, is water resistant, can withstand pressures up to 15,000 feet, can be left out in the blazing sunshine, and can operate at temperatures ranging from -27oF to 145oF, as well as having the rather more mundane features of 512Kb of memory, a supertwist liquid crystal display with 200 by 640 resolution screen, and four card expansion slots which, together, give 32Mb of solid state memory; many deep sea divers, Arctic explorers and Kalahari bushmen will find this MS-DOS 3.2.1 laptop a snip at $7,000 – and the batteries are claimed to last for from between 12 to 24 hours.
