The highest performance 1 high drives in the 3.5 form factor is the claim by Maxtor Corp for its new Cheyenne 7120 AT and SCSI diskswhich have 130.4Mb of usable storage; there is also a 7060 in AT and SCSI versions, which stores 65.2Mb. The drives feature 6Mbyte-per-second transfer rate and 15mS average seek time, the fastest seek time for a drive in that form factor and capacity. The company claims mean time between failures of 150,000 hours, but we have to take its word for that because it would take until the year 2007 to prove it. The drives weigh 1 lb 3.2 oz and have embedded firmware designed to cut power consumption to as low as 0.1W in sleep mode, 0.6W in standby. In OEM quantities, the 7120 is $500, the 7060 $300, available December.
