Another problem IBM has never faced up to with the RT is the way in which open standards in the market have forced manufacturers to come to terms with permanent revolution, constant renewal: one of the most striking developments at DEC is the way the company is rejuvenating its product lines every six months – just as the Japanese manufacturers have done for years, and it is just not IBM’s way to bring out new models of any product line before it has squeezed the existing models dry; the company is already falling behind in bringing out new AS/400 models and all the brave words on what wonderful new models would be appearing thick and fast in the PS/2 line ring very hollow now.
