Xerox Corp has just come out with a new mid-range copier, the 1065, which is claimed to do all the clever things the big ones do without sacrificing speed – and to be driven by a microprocessor as powerful as five personal computers… it’d better be, because the Xerox 1055 we have here at Apt is driven by a NEC copy of the Intel 8086 and makes Princess Diana look like a genius: the Rank-Xerox engineers have also clearly never seen the customer-relations training films – they’re past masters at the Who sold you this then whistle through the teeth, and their favourite line is the Japanese expect to throw these away after two years – that’s their design life, quite ignoring the fact that one of their own salesman installed the machine on a four-year lease contract.
