Fujitsu Ltd is pitching for local area network leadership with a new fibre-optic network that runs at 410 or 205 M-bits per second and includes integrated voice communications. The Facom 2890 Multimedia Highway System hardware will be offered with the company’s new COINS II Corporate Information Network System software and 2690 hardware providing central control for packet-switches, digital PABXs, multiplexers and other communications equipment. Fujitsu claims it to be the first network running at more than 100 M-bits per second as well as the first with support for digital speech as well as data. A broadband system, it supports star, loop and bus networks. The 2890 hardware costs $915,000, the 2690 system is $59,000. Fujitsu expects to sell 100 local networks and 250 network systems over three years.
