Figures from the US Software Publishers Association in Washington indicate that North American software sales for the third quarter increased 24.4% to an estimated $1,150m measured at retail compared with the same period last year. International sales of US software firms grew 61.2% over the same period and overall growth for both domestic and international sales was 34.1%. Going into details, sales of MS-DOS and Windows increased 31.9% and Windows applications sales increased 213.1%; Macintosh sales were up 5.5% but Macintosh desktop publishing sales rose 91.2%. Bad news for Apple in its pedagogic stronghold was that sales of educational software written to run under MS-DOS rose 38.5%.
