Storage Technology Corp, Louisville, Colorado, has created interfaces to enable its Nearline R4400 Automated Cartridge System to be used with Cray Research Inc X-MP, Y-MP and Cray-2 computer systems running either COS or UniCOS. The Cray systems access the 4400 through a combination of software from Cray Research and StorageTek running on a support IBM processor. Initial support was offered in July by the Cray VM Station, elease 6.0, for COS or UniCOS, and support by Cray’s MVS Station will be available later this year. The 4400 automates mounting and demounting of 18-track cartridges on StorageTek’s 4480 Cartridge Subsystem drives attached to the Automated Cartridge System and the cartridges then are read and written directly by the Cray supercomputer. Support for the 4480 cartridge tape drives by Cray supercomputers was announced in August 1988.
