Also hiring is IBM Japan, looking for over 500 additional technical staff, mainly systems engineers and programmers this year, and the number will be a record, exceeding the 370 additional people taken on in 1984: while the company’s business in most of the rest of the world is uninspiring at best, the Japanese market is booming, and with it the local IBM company, which saw sales last year grow 20% to $8,000m or so, with sales of the 3090, the System/36, and the 5550 personal particularly featured; the local company also benefitted from exports of 3.5 Winchesters for use with the Personal System/2 in the US; sales are forecast to grow 15% this year.
