Disk Technologies Corp, Winter Park, Florida has given San Jose-based Areal Technology Inc a $4m contract for its MD-2060 ultra-thin, high-capacity 2.5 fixed disk drives: Disctec will use the Areal drives in its Disctec RHD 60, a palm-sized removable 60Mb data storage cartridge for MS-DOS based desktops, portables and notebook computers. The RHD 60 will give users the option to remove data from the system for security or safety reasons or when the drive is being transported, and to interchange data between different systems and costs $865. MD-2060 2.5 drives are now being produced at Areal’s 27,000 square foot facility in San Jose. Higher volume production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 1991 under the contract-manufacturing agreement recently signed between Areal and Sanyo Electric Co (CI No 1,545). The MD-2060 stores 62.9Mb of formatted data on a single glass platter and is therefore only 0.6 high including the board.
