Hitachi is moving up into Maxtor’s market with the DK514, a 5.25 Winchester disk drive storing 382Mb, double the current DK512 170Mb, in the US and the UK. The drive offers three interface options and faster access times and data transfer rates. The three interfaces are ESDI, ESMD, or embedded SCSI and the new drive features average access time of 16mS and a data transfer rate of 1.8Mbytes per second. The DK514 uses a voice coil motor, requires approximately 30W, and is rated at 30,000 hours mean time between failures. Capacity has been doubled by increasing bit density by 50% using oxide-coated media, and adding two platters. The drive uses LSI circuitry on a single printed circuit board. Sample units with the ESDI interface will be available in July 1987; ESMD and embedded SCSI models will be available in the fourth quarter of 1987. The DK514 will be $2,700 per unit in OEM quantities of 100.
