France Telecom has launched an enhanced version of the Minitel terminal for viewdata and directory inquiries – and, with a suitable additional interface, it can double as the command station for running an intelligent house, switching on the central heating, setting and monitoring burglar alarms and so forth. But unlike the standard Minitel, 3m of which are in use, customers will have to pay for the Minitel 2. It provides password access to prevent unauthorised use, and gives automatic dialling to 10 Teletel viewdata services and other Teletel numbers can be dialled directly from the terminal without the need to use the telephone. The resolution is enhanced, there are extra characters in the set – and, for the fashion-conscious, you can have it in your choice of anthracite grey or ivory. The Minitel 2 will rent for $6 a month.
