SolarWinds, a provider of network management software, has made additions to the company’s product offering designed to give IT professionals control over application monitoring, enabling them to troubleshoot problems before they have business impact.

The company has introduced a new free tool, SolarWinds WMI Monitor, and the latest version of Orion Application Performance Monitor (APM) – the second module in the Orion network management family.

The company claimed that Orion APM has offered agentless monitoring, alerting, and reporting capabilities for applications. The third version of the product takes monitoring to a new level – incorporating automatic discovery and a broad assortment of out-of-the-box templates, with integration to community-generated resources on thwack.

Between the application support that Orion APM offers and the templates available from the community, users will be able to find and monitor virtually any application as soon as it is added to their environment, the company said.

As a module of Orion Network Performance Monitor (NPM), Orion APM reportedly presents application monitoring data alongside comprehensive network performance information, giving IT and network professionals a picture of network health.

Orion APM’s Application Discovery Engine automatically scans network servers, discovers applications, and assigns out-of-the-box templates including Microsoft Exchange, IIS, Active Directory, and Apache, the company noted.

The latest version of Orion APM is also expected to offer enhanced end-user Quality of Experience (QoE) measurement through out-of-the-box SaaS monitoring and support for HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and other ODBC databases.

Kenny Van Zant, SVP and chief product strategist of SolarWinds, said: Often, the biggest challenge with application monitoring comes from the ever-changing application landscape – new applications, new instances, different versions and platforms. With the latest release of Orion APM, we are giving IT professionals a product that has the ability to stay ahead of that curve – offering the features and community integration needed to monitor today’s dynamic enterprise application environments.
