DEC UK also used the MicroVAX 3000 launch to extend and explain its networking offerings. Heading the new product announcements was news of the availability of full-speed Ethernet on twisted pair cable. Developed in co-operation with 3Com Corp, twisted pair Ethernet allows users to choose any wiring scheme, including existing telephone cabling, to connect workstations while preserving the 10Mbits-per-second transmission rate of Ethernet. Further underlining DEC’s commitment to the provision of the widest possible range of connectivity was the announcement of a server that links PABXs and Ethernet via an S2 interface. A version that connects Plessey’s ISDX PABX to Ethernet is sheduled to be out before the end of the year. DECconnect was also boosted by the launch of a European version of the Satellite Equipment Room Rack and an office communications cabinet. DECconnect and the PBX Terminal Server both fall within the Unrestricted Connectivity category of DEC’s network strategy. DEC also announced immediate support for IBM’s SNA Distribution Services mail service with a promise of Profs E-Mail links to come later.
