Elxsi Corp, the San Jose company that reversed into Dr Gene Amdahl’s Trilogy Ltd, may have far modest ambitions than those with which its new parent started, but it is now profitable – and continuing to win business for its 64-bit System 6400 minisupercomputer. The company has installed a system in the Flight Dynamics Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio under subcontract form Lear Siegler. The 6400 will be used as the host processor for the Rapidly Reconfigurable Crew Station project to develop unique and revolutionary crew systems design capabilities. It can be adapted to simulate numerous environments for many different military aircraft. Instead of testing one aircraft, the evolving crew systems will be used to test a multitude of aircraft and generate both crew station and mission software very quickly. The Elxsi system currently consists of one 6420 CPU and 16Mb memory and will be expanded to at least three 6420 CPUs and 128Mb.
