Addressing the united party faithful at the long-awaited launch of the Social and Liberal Democratic Party yesterday, former SDP president Mrs Shirley Williams (actually the former Mrs Williams, too) pledged support – and presumably, if it ever came to it, funds – for building a new high-tech Britain – but before this could happen, she explained, the nation would have to move into a new era of industrial relations, where teamwork and discussion wiped out existing hierarchical mismanagement; always one to practise what she preaches, Mrs Williams later soothed electoral power-hungry new recruits by confirming that the appointment of a party leader and president was urgently awaiting the expert consideration of the interim federalexecutive (thinktank, working party, seminar group, quango) committee…
