Schools and colleges are sitting on a “data loss time bomb” as corporate data is held on individual laptops and PCs rather than safely backed up on servers.
Although IT departments urged teachers and staff to back up information to servers, the message was clearly not getting through. More than half (55%) of teachers and 23% of headteachers said they experienced data loss last year, according to an Acronis survey.
Up to 60% of data, including pupil coursework, teacher lesson plans and school records, were being held on laptops and PCs rather than servers. The situation was made exacerbated because many of the staff worked at home, opening themselves up to accidental damage, theft or virus attacks.
