A key weakness of ICL by comparison with its major foreign rivals has been an almost total absence of defence business to bolster its figures, so the company has special reason to celebrate winning the UKair contract from the UK Ministry of Defence, announced yesterday. ICL won the business in a consortium with Computer Sciences Corp, Information Processing Ltd of Bath and VDU manufacturer Lynwood Scientific Developments Ltd of Alton, Hampshire to provide the UKair command and control system for the Royal Air Force. The contract is widely speculated to be worth around UKP100m and ICL says it is one of the most significant contracts it has ever won. ICL and Computer Sciences were also involved in implementing the Royal Navy’s Opcon command and control system.
