NCR Corp’s energetic programme of buying in its shares stood the company in good stead at the earnings per share level, when despite a fall in fourth quarter profits, per share earnings managed a 3% rise (see Company Results, page five): commenting on the figures, chairman Chuck Exley said that the company was encouraged by fourth quarter orders and market acceptance of several new products and enhancements but warns that the year to-year order declines in the second and third quarters of 1988 indicate that earnings and revenue growth will be difficult to achieve in the first half of this year adding that the company is continuing to plan on single digit revenue growth for the full year, while taking appropriate cost control measures to produce similar gains in earnings; increased spending on new product development will continue.
