Reflecting the confusion that holds sway within IBM itself in the wake of Amdahl Corp’s announcement of the blockbuster 5990 top end processor family, Gartner Group’s Paris office reckons that instead of replacing the F models of the 3090 that are expected to be launched in late summer or early autumn with the next generation Summit processors, the company could come out with a G series late next year, offering another 15% to 20% performance boost over the F models and coming with more than six processors, as well as faster channels and additional microcode accelerators for Enterprise Systems Architecture – implying that we may not see first Summit ships till early 1991.
