Talks over the privatisation of Deutsche Bundespost Telekom, seen as so vital to its future by the people running it, are in danger of collapse, Reuter reports from Bonn. I was bitterly disappointed, Elmar Mller, deputy chairman of parliament’s telecommunications committee said of Sunday’s talks between the Christian Democratic Union-led government and the opposition Social Democrats. He said the left-wing opposition – whose support is needed since a 75% majority is needed to get the necessary constitutional amendments through – threatened progress made so far with new demands. He accused the Socialists of wanting to delay the talks or even see them fail. Mller said the main controversy is still over the future influence the Lander – states – would have over decisionmaking in Telekom.
