Checkpoint Systems Inc, Texas Instruments Inc and the Target Stores unit of Dayton Hudson Corp are working together to test the effect of source-tagged merchandise available on open display as part of Checkpoint’s Impulse source tagging programme which embeds thin, disposable security targets into the packaging of products, making them inaccessible to shoplifters, before they reach the retail shelves; the trio say that source tagging creates goodwill for customers, who can examine and choose products quickly and conveniently without having to wait for sales help, while deterring potential shoplifters since they will not know which products in open display are protected by tags and which are not.
