GTE is to start an international electronic messaging service for voice, electronic mail, still pictures and facsimile traffic, using its telemessaging service, TMS, and TV telephones – between Japan and the US from this autumn and will form a planning company for it this month. The service, which is also planned to extend to the UK, will rely on Nippon Telegraph and Telephone’s network within Japan. Night-time rates to the US and the voice mail service will be 40% cheaper than current services in the same area, offered by Kokusai Denshin Denwa, KDD. GTE will use international dial-up lines to connect to subsidiary GTE Telemessager leased lines in the US. GTE is expecting great demand from Japanese companies expanding overseas.
