A diversification into relational database managers is in the plan at Digital Research Inc, Monterey, California, according to Microbytes. The daily newswire reports that although the company has no intention of battling it out with the likes of Ashton-Tate, it does plan an entry into the market this year. Instead of starting from scratch with its own full-blown database product, the company is thinking in terms of an easy-to-use front end to IBM’s forthcoming database environment. The firm says that products are likely to focus on file-servers or micro-to-mainframe link software. The newswire notes that Edgar Codd, considered the father of relational databases – was at the firm’s press conference called to launch the new desktop publishing program last week (CI No 673).
