Drexler Technology Corp, Mountain View, California has been extremely successful in winning licencees for its ingenious LaserCard optical memory card that burns data onto the tape coating of a plastic card, much less successful at making money out of the things: licencees range from British Telecom here to the cream of Japanese industry, and on May 21, two of them, US-based Pesch & Co and Japan’s CSK Corp announced formation of a joint venture to develop and market information systems using the card, under the name Genus Technology Corp; first product planned by Genus is a complete information system comprising optical memory device, read-write unit and customised software for an MS-DOS micro, which will initially be aimed at hospital management and medical applications.
