Veeam Software, one of a number of software houses that have developed around the emerging market for systems management tools for VMware virtualised environments, has put out a revamped version of its service monitoring suite.

nworks 5.0 allows IT departments to monitor and manage VMware’s latest vSphere virtual environments using existing Microsoft System Center Operations Manager or HP Operations Manager consoles. A new nworks Smart Plug for vSphere 5.0 updates Veeam’s integration for distributed VMware infrastructure monitoring and management for HP Operations Manager for Unix and Windows.

A new web-based administrative interface component added to the nworks system, called the nworks Management Center, is said to improve scalability, and provides high availability and load balancing by managing multiple instances of the nworks agentless collectors used across large enterprise deployments.

Ratmir Timashev, President & CEO told us the system provides full support for VMware  vSphere and can now cope with the demands of the largest of virtualisation environments.

The product has been developed from the outset to address some of the specific challenges of virtualisation management, which are different from those seen with physical servers. “Performance management and capacity planning are dramatically different, because the laws of physics do not apply where different VMs consume resources of a specific server in very different ways,” he said.

The company has come out of the same group of founders and management team as were behind Aelita Software, a provider of a Windows Active Directory and change management suite which was acquired by Quest Software Inc in 2004 for $130 million.

Interestingly, Veeam’s closest rival in the virtualisation systems management sector is Quest Software’s Vizioncore, which like it also has a line in virtualisation data protection. Veeam Backup is a flagship product for the St Petersburg, Russia based company.

The business has its US headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. As well as selling the nworks connectors for Microsoft MP and HP SPI, the 150-strong vendor produces Veeam Reporter and Reporter Enterprise, Veeam Monitor and Veeam Configurator, products that are used for reporting, monitoring and controlling VMs in VMware estates.

The Veeam nworks Management Pack for Microsoft System Centre Manager and Smart Plug-in for HP Operations Manager are both available immediately, with UK pricing pitched at £360 per socket for the MP and £550 per socket for the SPI edition.
