Memorex Telex International NV won the monster personal computer contract at the Galileo air reservation consortium, but the comparable contract from the rival Amadeus Development Company SA, Nice, has been split between two suppliers – IBM, already announced (CI No 1,421) – and Siemens AG, whose share is valued a whopping $400m – at market prices over five years: no-one is saying what kind of discount the consortium will get. The machines will be offered to travel agents wanting to get onto the Amadeus air reservation system, which is being built for Air France, Lufthansa, SAS and Iberia. Siemens will be supplying both AT bus and Micro Channel machines, and will support Unix, MS-DOS and OS/2.
