Phoenix Technologies Ltd, Norwood, Massachusetts yesterday demonstrated an enhanced version of its software co-processor emulation of MS-DOS at Motorola’s rather belated formal launch of the MC68030. The new version has been designed to take maximum advantage of virtual memory systems, throughput of which is greatly increased by the integrated cache and memory management of the 68030. The co-processor attains high speed by compiling MS-DOS programs on the fly for maximum performance. Other added performance features include a Norton Si performance measurement of 6.0 on a 25MHz 68020, full 80287 emulation support using the native co-processor for real-time floating point operation, and copy protection support for ill-behaved applications using SCSI floppy disk drives.
