McAfee said that it plans to open a new McAfee Labs facility in Santiago, Chile, in a move to expand its global footprint and strengthen its position as a global security research organisation.

The new facility, which is planned to be opened in the third quarter of 2010, is expected to house more than 60 researchers, developers, quality assurance engineers and support experts, with potential for further expansion.

The company said that the expansion of McAfee Labs will help them improve the customer experience and allow for more technical innovation. The expansion in Latin America expands the company’s capability to deal with the continued onslaught of malicious software and to further innovate on McAfee technology.

McAfee Labs is responsible for the technology that enables McAfee to secure computer users. With more than 6,000 employees, McAfee operates from offices in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

McAfee said that Santiago was chosen for its well developed infrastructure, the country’s political and economic stability, available government incentives as well as the strong emphasis Chileans put on education. The company said that it has already made connections with universities in Chile for recruitment and collaboration on curriculum.

Hiep Dang, director of McAfee Labs operations for the Americas, said: “By establishing a research team in Chile, we will not only be able to better serve our customers in Chile and Latin America, but around the globe.

“Chile is a great place to do this – the country has a plethora of talent and will give us a truly international operation that will support our drive to strengthen our position as the number one security vendor.”
