Alpha Microsystems Inc, Santa Ana, California, yesterday announced the AM-1200 line of multiuser, multitasking supermicrocomputers, replacing the AM-1000 line but like it based on the 68000 microprocessor. The new machines offer more user ports, memory, disk, and lower per-user price. The company is also supporting the Unify Corp’s Unify relational database under its AMOS operating system. Designed for such vertical markets as dental, medical, legal and educational, the AM-1200 series is the new entry to the family and features IBM Proprinter-compatible parallel port to support cheapo printers, and support of five to 13 users. Main memory goes from 1Mb to 4Mb, and 25Mb, 30Mb and 70Mb disks are offered as is the company’s innovative video cassette recorder back-up facility. The AM-1200B, has five ports and a 20Mb disk with terminal for $8,300, the AM-1200E has 13 ports, 35Mb disk and is $11,630, the AM-1200XP 13 ports and 70Mb disk for $13,300, including AMOS, all available in the US now. Unify will be available in May. Alpha Micro celebrated its 10th anniversary last with a six-city tour to introduce the new boxes, taking in New York City, Orlando, Florida, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco.
