San Jose-based Masstor Systems Corp, builder of top-end mass storage subsystems for IBM mainframes, has introduced a new controller architecture, Storage Management Executive in response to IBM’s System/390 announcements. The new architecture moves about 75% of Masstor’s host-dep endent control software away from the IBM mainframe and into the M962 Storage Controller, so the storage directory no longer requires access to shared IBM disk drives. And re ducing the host-resident software component will make it easier for Masstor to offer compatibility in an open system environment through direct, high-speed, channel attach ment, the company says. IBM’s int roduction of Escon 10Mbyte-per- second fibre optic channels will speed user access to high capacity storage subsystems such as Mass tor’s M1000 Storage Module, and en able it to be remote from the host.
