Factory revenue for the Western European security appliance market declined by 9.6% to $390m in the second quarter of 2009, compared to the same period last year, according to IDC Western European Security Appliance tracker.
According to the study, the firewall/VPN market represented $84.79m in the second quarter, down 20%, compared to the same period last year. The results were on par with the first quarter of 2009, with 3.8% revenue growth. Cisco retained the top spot in the segment, followed by Juniper Networks and Nokia.
UTM represented the largest market of the tracked security appliances, with total revenue of $113m in the second quarter of 2009, down 0.6%, compared to the same period last year. Fortinet stood on top, followed by WatchGuard and Juniper, according to the study.
According to IDC, the Intrusion prevention appliances (IPS) decreased by 22.5% to $66.15m, the VPN applicance market decreased 5.8% to $55.07m in the second quarter of 2009.
The firm expects the IPS market growth to resume during the second half of 2009, as more compliance issues are coming to Europe. Cisco stood in the first place, followed by McAfee, and IBM-ISS.
Content management appliance revenue was up 12.2% to $68.97m in the second quarter of 2009, compared to the same period last year. The messaging security and web security segments of SCM are following the same evolution as the threat management market, from software to appliance form factor.
Cisco remained the number one vendor in the content management appliance segment and the messaging and web security subcategories, while McAfee dominated the web and messaging subcategory, the firm said.
