British Telecommunications Plc yesterday insisted to Reuters that it was neither a monopoly nor a utility and should therefore not be forced to pay the proposed windfall tax on its profits under a Labor government. The phone company pointed out that since privatization 12 years ago, it had given 47bn pounds back to the government from contributions such as income tax, value added tax and employees national insurance contributions, and it has to compete with 150 other firms.
