Digital Equipment Corp is set to announce new Alpha-based Personal Workstations today, hears our sister newsletter ClieNT Server News. The machines, code-named Miatas, incorporate its new single-chip chipset, Pyxis. The roll-out will give the Personal Workstation line a new entry point, a 433MHz machine with Matrox graphics is said to be priced at $5k for 32Mb, 2.5Gb and an eight speed CD-ROM drive. There will also be a high-end 64Mb 500MHz configuration – Digital has finally started getting volumes on the 500MHz Alpha chips – that fully configured with PowerStorm graphics are likely to cost around $13,000. The fact the Pyxis chip, which is expected to have a 128-bit memory bus on-board, is maybe half the cost of its Alcor 2 predecessor, doesn’t seem to have had an impact on the company’s pricing schedule
