Things move slowly in the world of accounting systems and Windows is still regarded as something of a novelty. Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK-based Sage Group Plc, which claims to be the world’s leading supplier of personal computer accounting software, has only just announced the release of Sovereign for Windows Version 2. Sovereign is Sage’s top of the range, modular accounting package for larger companies. While this release may seem a touch slow to the average computer user, Sage insists that demand is still so strong for its MS-DOS based products that the need for Windows compatibility is a new phenomenon. But only the core accounting functions based around purchase, sales and nominal ledgers are available now, with network users having to wait until June before they can join the roll-out. Further non-core modules such as stock control and invoicing will be released in six to nine months. The plus point for Sage’s customers is that existing MS- DOS modules will run side by side with newly acquired Windows modules allowing for gradual upgrading. Sage also claims a seamless linking capability with third-party products such as Microsoft Office. All Sovereign’s data will be available for export into spreadsheets for analysis or to word processors for mailshots. The benefits of this should liven up even the quietest of accounts departments.
