AT&T Corp signed a memorandum of understanding with Telefonica de Espana SA, Telecom Italia SpA and Companhia Portuguesa Radio Marconi to lay a transatlantic fiber cable that will go into service by July 1999. The total cost of the Columbus III project is expected to be $270m to $310m, AT&T declared.
