TDK Life on Record, a portfolio brand of Imation, has released LTO Ultrium Generation 5 tape cartridges, which has 1.5 terabytes of native capacity (3.0 terabytes compressed), a near doubling of capacity over the previous generation, and data transfer rates of up to 280MB per second compressed.

The company said that the LTO Generation 5 includes new partitioning functionality that can enable file control and space management. The tape is the second generation to offer drive level hardware-based encryption of data being written to the tape cartridge, while providing additional security for the storage and transport of sensitive data.

TDK said that the new LTO Ultrium 5 also offers WORM (Write-Once, Read-Many) functionality. The new drives are read-and-write backwards compatible with the Ultrium format generation 4 cartridges, and backward read capable with generation 3 cartridges.

William Qualls, global product director for tape products at Imation, said: “For more than a decade, businesses across the world have relied on LTO technology as an effective and reliable format to address backup, archive, compliance, and data security needs. With LTO Ultrium 5, we have nearly doubled capacity, increased transfer rates, and provided new partitioning capability.”
