The consumer Internet Service Provider, Prodigy Inc, is attempting to stage a comeback by updating the Internet service it launched last October (CI No 3,024). Prodigy, currently lying fourth in the Internet service provider market after America Online Inc, Microsoft Corp and CompuServe Inc, currently has less than 1 million users. The update adds personalized services, improved chat features, and personal agents. Prodigy is also expanding its Shopping Network with a shopping service engine and database of 20,000 items available for on line purchase. Prodigy was merged with International Wireless Inc, last July (CI No 2966) having been sold for a fraction of Sears & Roebuck & Co’s asking price of $500m for its 50% stake, IBM Corp and Sears had apparently lost over $1bn in the venture.
